Military Service

Scheduling an appointment for certain consular services is mandatory and is done by calling, via WhatsApp/SMS at the number +1 202 706 0209 and/or by email at consular@serbiaembusa.org.

OBLIGATIONS OF MILITARY CONSCRIPTS RESIDING ABROAD

Persons residing in the consular district of the Embassy are subject to the obligation of being entered into the military records. By being entered into the military records, the conscript has regulated their military obligation.

For the purpose of regulating military obligation, the following are entered into the Embassy’s military records:

  • a person who permanently resides abroad in the calendar year in which they turn 18, as well as older persons who, for any reason, have not been entered into the military records
  • a person who has traveled abroad for a stay longer than one year. Such a person is required, within 30 days of crossing the state border, to report to the competent diplomatic-consular mission of the Republic of Serbia

To be entered into the military records, the following documents must be submitted:

  • copy of a Republic of Serbia passport
  • proof of residence in the USA (identification document with residential address, e.g. driver’s license)
  • completed form for entry into military records (PDF)
  • consular fee in the amount of $4, payable in cash or by money order made out to the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Washington

For a citizen of the Republic of Serbia who has not completed military service, the Center of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Serbia for Local Self-Government will, ex officio, issue a decision on transfer to the reserve forces when that person turns 30. A decision on transfer to the reserve forces for a citizen younger than 27 will be issued upon request, provided they meet the conditions under Articles 44 and 66, paragraph 4 of the Law on Labor, Military and Material Obligation.

If a person, in addition to citizenship of the Republic of Serbia, also holds citizenship of another country, they must submit documentation regarding this.

Required documents:

  • completed form for entry into military records (PDF)
  • copy of Serbian passport
  • certified copy of certificate of foreign citizenship with translation into Serbian by an authorized court interpreter
  • certified copy of identification document with address of residence in the USA (e.g. driver’s license) with translation into Serbian by an authorized court interpreter
  • employment certificate with translation into Serbian, and/or other documents proving that the center of economic and family life is abroad (e.g. proof of loans, ownership of real estate, etc.), with translation into Serbian

The consular fee of $4 is payable in cash or by money order made out to the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Washington.

If a person with dual citizenship has completed military service in another country whose citizenship they hold, they may submit a request for transfer into the reserve component of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Serbia.
